History of CDL Program at SLCC
Back in April 2018, South Louisiana Community College or SLCC announced it was expanding its new CDL training program. The associate VP for Economic and Workforce Development at the school, Jermaine Ford, said, “We’re continually looking at workforce demands throughout Acadiana and we’re finding that there may be a demand for our CDL program in Ville Platte and Evangeline Parish.”
The school started its first semester in Crowley and Morgan City. The program was a success, so the school added the Evangeline Parish to the program and then the New Iberia Parish in October 2018. Presently, you can attend CDL training at South Louisiana Community College at the following campus locations:
- Acadia Parish at the Acadian Campus in Crowley, LA
- Evangeline Parish at the CB Coreil Campus in Ville Platte, LA
- Iberia Parish at the New Iberia Campus in New Iberia, LA
- Iberia Parish at the International School of Aviation Excellence in New Iberia, LA

About Class A and Class B CDL Training
When you get ready to attend CDL training at SLCC here’s what you can expect to find. You start with choosing whether you want a Class A or Class B CDL. A Class A CDL will give you the skills you need to become an OTR truckload driver. A Class B CDL is for regional truckers who drive straight trucks and handle LTL freight. Once you decide on a Class A or B CDL you get to select how long you want to be in trucking school. The college offers CDL training for seven weeks during the weekday or 10 weeks during the evenings.
At the school, you receive 245 combination hours of classroom and behind the wheel training. That’s enough time to cover everything you need to know for the DOT rules and CDL exams. You train on pre-trip inspections and driver skills for your future over the road trucking jobs. You also are trained on CSA scores, hours of service, defensive driving skills, and other vital job skillsets for truck drivers. At SLCC students also get access to driver simulator training. This training is in a mobile classroom.
